I actually (without reading the description of the other uncolored version you made) thought this was a fridge and that he was surprised to have found this letter and the apple (being that they are the only thing inside colored) inside it...
Also the whole fridge idea also came to me cuz... well it would be something I would do, heh... like if I wanted to tell my brother something I would leave a letter in the most unlikely of places that I know he would not think of to look at furst... to by time till I decided to do, what it is I wanted to do...... Yeah... I digress...
