After a long time in the new world, Steve found a good way to protect himself. Since diamonds were rare, he spent them only on weapons and a pickaxe. Strong armor was made from iron, which later saved Steve from troubles more than once.
P.S. There are several similarities between Skyrim and Minecraft - glass and diamond weapons, resource mining, weapon enchantment, potion brewing, dragon fighting, etc. This gave me a hint for the right SFM models.
