Original art and "lucky" Incubateur example by https://bsky.app/profile/hanimetion.bsky.social
I've shown the Noirspawn before, Noir's odd little minions. This is a deep dive into just how truly bizarre that fat cat is and her ability to perpetuate herself endlessly :V So behold, the life cycle of the spawns, and gratuitous French!
The Noirspawn: These variably sized, semi amorphous white furred cat humanoids are a highly invasive, parasitic gestalt entity that can and will infest and assimilate whatever people they can into minions for the bloated slugcat queen that is Noir. Possessing black sclera with yellow pupils, they look eerie at any stage. They're often seeded via meteorites (if interplentary) or eggs are released into water sources to faciliate long distance propagation.
Œuf: The initial form of every Noirspawn, the humble egg. This almost football sized, black shelled egg contains the yellow glowing, pulsating initial developing larval stage and is almost always gestated with an Incubateur host or within carefully environmentally specialized delivery methods (e.e, asteroid). Inert on its own, but rapidly developing spawn will quickly leave this stage.
Parasitic larval stages: The bread n butter intermediary stages that involve assimilation of intelligent hosts.
Cheurcheuse: The default Noirspawn larva, this small critter, no bigger than its egg and being just a tarry black blob with yellow eyes and vague cat features, seems weak and harmless, and nominally it is. However, a Chercheuse has two insidious methods of being implicitly not harmless: It can bond with and assimilate a sentient host and conver them into a Pionne drone, or if it matures without possessing a host, it may develop into semi-humanoid Chercheur-vide, a nascent worker form that usually stays within hives to perform menial tasks.
Intendant: A more specialized parasite with more mobility, the Intendant is more aggressive than the Chercheusse and seeks out stronger looking hosts to convert into the standard Gladiateur combat form. These usually manifest after a hive has been established for a while.
Sauvage: A larger, even more aggressive larva with developed forelimbs, this parasite seeks out hosts of adequate enough biomass or genetic markers for muscle development to convert into the hulking, terrifying Bête combat form,
Nichée: This rotund spawn is the primary instigator of the Noirspawn swarm's reproductive method, seeking out viable female hosts who are of sufficient biomass (or possess genetic markers that predispose them towards weight accumilation), convering them into bloated, gravid Incubateurs who do nothing but eat and gestate additional eggs, or if need be, work in small groups to push the host to the absolute limit and conver them into a Cocon stage host.
Imitarice: The most advanced type of spawn, the Imitarice has a resemblance to Noir herself, albeit a more humanoid, mobile version of her.
Converted Hosts: The true bulk of a Noirspawn hive, these are previously humanoids assimilated and transformed into drones of varyng utility,
Pionne: The standard conversion, these short (though heights vary), thin Noirspawn look almost cute, resembling Noir in a far more cartoonish, deceptively harmless looking state. While assimilated, the host's memories and personality aren't destroyed and merely recontextualized to serve the hive's needs, allowing for some degree of autonomy even if their primary drive is to carry out the will of the hive. Loved ones and friends will be recognized, offered genuine chance to join the swarm as they see it as "far better" now. Capable of tool use and operating vehicles if the knowledge from relevant hosts has been assimilated, making them the versatile workhorse of the Swarm.
Gladiteur; A larger, more muscular version of the Pionne possessing larger, sharper teeth, claws and chitin reinforced knuckle spikes, the Gladiateur is the primary heavy combat form of the hive, often surfacing once an infestation has matured enough to produce Intendant class larvae. Aggressive and vicious, they're used to spearhead raids and assaults on host positions or defend the nest, capable of fast movement and gruesome violence.
Bête: These hulking brutes are rare and serve as a last line of defence in the event of a direct attack on the hive or if resistance begins using heavily armored responses the Gladiateurs can't crack, Bêtes are 7ft tall by default and possess dense, powerful muscle and chitin reinforced claws, potentially with heavy addition from minerals and metals assimilated during host merge to further strengthen their natural weapons.
Incubateur: Possibly the most unpleasant of the hosts, the Incubateur isn't fully assimilated by its Nichée parasite, instead existing in a state of perpetual, heavily pregnant gluttonous torpor, incubating numerous eggs and being fed to grotesque size by Pioness feeding them foodstocks gathered during foraging an raids, or via concentrated biomass slurry. Typically more self-aware than other hosts, but can do little besides groan from hunger and pressure.
Cocon: A completely subsumated host, possibly an Incubateur at full "maturity" or the result of multiple Nichée larvae bonding to a single unfortunate victim, the Cocon is more or less just a pulsating lump of pregnant biomass stuffed to bursting with eggs, often used as living weapons by the hive or when recycling older Incubateurs. Host's original consciousness likely distributed from body into the gestalt for repurposing into more mobile forms.
Réplinoir; The queens of the hive, these enormous, fat, snow furred humanoid cat women are the result of an Imitarice bonding with a suitable host, fully convering them into a mobile version of Noir that can psychically direct the gestalt and lead the hive intelligently once its matured enough to produce the Imitarice class larvae. These controllers are fully sapient and view their hives as simply "the natural order of things". Individual Réplinoir personalities can vary but all of them think what they're doing, serving the Noir gestalt, is morally right.
Upon full saturation of biomass consumption within maximum area a hive can feasibly reach without becoming detrimental to itself, it will begin using Pioness to spread eggs and Incubateurs further away to restart the cycle, smuggling away aboard stolen vehicles or eggs floated away via water sources.
And well, that's the Noirspawn in a nutshell, my awful, terrible parasitic goocat goobers :V
