I always like to think of the stairs as “delving” deeper, getting closer to the deepest part of the area, rather than simply going above/under ground. After all, it is a “mystery dungeon”, so it tracks that there’s a few “mysteries” in it, and one can always go deeper into a dungeon.
Eh, Not quite as bad as learning; there was contest to get to the 100th floor of a super hard dungeon in the original tactics-ogre, But since it was originally released on the super-famicom(snes) in japan and only made it overseas on the playstation the contest was over long before anyone in the west got their hands on it.
