Here is a thing I have been putting off for a while.
This is a dipper, a tool used by smiths to cool areas of hot iron so that it isn't as malleable as the rest of the workpiece. This prevents that area from deforming while hammering on the work piece like working on a scroll.
Certain parts of a forged item may need to be cooled down to isolate heat, an example would be when a smith is performing an "upset" in a bar a few inches away from the end of it. You cool down the end part while keeping that section in the middle glowing hot. The smith would then hammer the end and pack that material in on itself. That portion becomes fatter in diameter while the cooled section remains the same.
