I know the first two seasons were building up to Nine going full, well...Dock Ock, but yeah the constant "And then they smash more Metal Sonic/Amy/Knuckles', and they get up and smash some more and some more and more and more" got kinda exhausting. And then just leaving us off with (And everything webnt back to normal except maybe not because SURPRISE OMINOUS BLUE ENERGY EXPLOSSION!" left me wanting more, especially with Nine and all the variants. Does Nine really decide to stay in The Grim or does he begin to miss having friends around and try to make another portal so he can see Sonic again? Do the rebels on New Yoke take back their world? Where to The Council end up? Could The Council team up with the original Eggman? What's up with "The Void of death and decay" that Shadow seamed to REALKLY emphasis was gonna be a super important plot point later but then just...wasn't? Could there be an even bigger threat lurking in there? Some kind of lovecraftian entity of pure entropy and darkness that awakens and tries to consume everything it touches? So many unanswered questions.
And so much potential for Sonic-series crossovers with the multiverse open. They could have gone to Earth (even though that's been kinda over-done), or what about, like, Seedrian survivors making their way into the Shatterverse and settling on Bosscage? What about other Sonics meeting each other from other shows? You know, go full Into the Sonicverse.
And COSMO MEETING NINE AND THE OTHER TAILS VARIANTS IS SOMETHING I NEEEED TO SEE!

Yeah; if I ahd to sum up Sonic Prime in one sentence itw ould be "MASSIVE waste of potential".
Pros:
- Nine himself: is probably the BEST example I can cite of a multiverse/time-travel alternate character being used well. Nine IS "Miles Prower": just "minus Sonic"; one data point changed and an entirely different person comes out of the same origin.
- Prime's version of Shadow is probably one of the best; and ditto his "moody big brother" relationship with Sonic; it's just too bad we don't get much of it... Or him interacting with Nine (more on that later)
- The three alternate Amys honestly ahve more distinct personalities and better development than most "modern strong female characters" I've seen of late... can't tell if that's genuine praise for Prime or a sad state of everything else.
- The fight choreography and action IS generally very well done; which is tricky to do with characters with speed as their main power set.
- As someone who found Sonic Boom Sonic utterly insufferable: Chaos Sonic basically being a riff on him was kind of amusing.
Problems:
- The shatter-verse is totally squandered; honestly it's sort of in the "worst of both worlds": they didn't make enough different worlds to make the cosmic multiverse angle stick well; really there's 3 "and a half" with the Grim and Ghost hill. Enough to be a bit confusing, but not enough for the sepctacle to land. If you're going to make a "prism": I'd have at least done 7; there, perfect Chaos Emerald connection; I even made a list of ones I'd have done.
- The Chaos Council being seemingly comprised of various "ages" of Dr. Eggman is a kind of brilliant spin on the same idea from Sonic Generatiosn... only; it doesn't really go anywhere; we're never given any reason for WHY that state of affairs came about.
- Nine's betrayal was well foreshadowed and makes sense; but he doesn't really "do" anything after that: he just becomes as inept as Eggman would be in his place. He has the power of a god, the mind of a genius, and all he can think to do is "print more robots" apparently. He SHOULD be capable of messing with Sonic on a personal level, he just doesn't. And given how much character DNA they share: I think they really missed a trick in not having Shadow be the one to talk him down since Sonic's tack wasn't working.
- It's a total missed opportunity that precisely zero of the "canon" characters besides Sonic ever interact with their alternate selves.
- Speaking of characters; it's incredibly weird to see Rouge elevated to a core cast member, but she basically never interacts with Shadow at all, none of her doppelgangers either. Honestly: her "leader with confidence issues" arc in Prime feels... weird; like it's meant for a totally different character. Honestly: I'd slot Blaze in here instead.
- And yeah; the ending is REALLY unsatisfying; "and then everything went back to normal!" is really a lame way to end it. It feels like they were just told "wrap it up, don't care how" and cut off a bunch of story threads. Honestly: I was half hoping we'd get a post-credits scene of Shadow appearing with the Prism to give it to Nine.

All the faults you mentioned can be summed up by one bigger issue; the show felt like it was building up to something more. A fourth season, a spin-off, multiple spin-offs. It worked perfectly as an opening to a "Into the Sonicverse" saga...but then just...doesn't.
As for Shadow...well I haven't played any of the games (yet, might start getting around to playing Sonic Heroes once I finish one of my current ongoing YouTube Let's Plays), the only other versions of Shadow I've seen are the one from Sonic X (and mostly Season 3 as I skipped Season 2 which apparently had the bulk of Shadow's character arc), and the Keanu Reaves version from the recent live-action movie which I really enjoyed. Keanu was practically MADE for the role. Also Jim Carry playing both Ivo and Gerald Robotnik. *Cheff's kiss*
What I found refreshing about the Amy and Rogue variants in Prime is that unlike in other shows, they actually feel like characters rather than caricatures. Amy is no longer just a Yandere and Rogue is no longer just...Catwoman with wings. Don't get me wrong, those versions of the characters are fun in moderation but get exhausting in long running shows like aforementioned Sonic X where every dang episode that's all they were. "Sonic is MY boyfriend! MINE!!!!" and "Mmmmm, I'd looove to get my hands on that shiny Chaos Emerald" gets kinda redundant after a while.
Rusty Rose is another character I wanted to see more of. Her character arch was near perfect too in my opinion. If Nine was Doc Ock in the Sonicverswe, she was Seven Of Nine (Star Trek Voyager if you're not a Trekkie.) A cyborg molded into the perfect killing machine who gradually breaks free of her reprograming and learns to regain some of her hedgehog-manity while still retaining the physical and mental capabilities her cyborg body grants her.
And this one is a smaller nitpick but I was a bit disappointed none of the other non-main-character rebels and pirates got names. I think they even made a joke about it at one point. And while I don't need family shows to be super dark and edgy...I feel like the writing reaaaaally stretched things to make EVERY single unnamed redshirt survive EVERY single battle. Yeah I get it, Sonic would never let anyone die, but even just one redshirt not making it would have made the battles have more impact. As good as the action was it was hard to feel like there were real stakes because I knew from all previous action scenes everybody's gonna just get back up totally fine. That's one advantage Sonic X had IMO. Unless their name was Shadow, if a character died, they died for real, and it mattered. The stakes were instantly raised to 11 ever time it happened (still REALLY want Cosmo to come back to life though. I maaaay be a hardcore Taismo shipper.)
