I made this about two years ago in metals class as an example of what can be done with cuttlefish bone casting. The growth rings on the inside of the cuttlebone give the ridges seen on the final casting. The full size of the casting is only 1.75 inches long.

Surprisingly, dead sea creatures smell really bad when you poor molten metal in them.

I never heard of cuttlefish bone casting before.

But my brother once tried to make a cast of a real dead shark with disastrous (and very stinky) results.

Didn't know cuttlefish bone could take that kind high temperature, did anyone of your classmates had their burnt ? And where did that texture came from? (carved, or was it came with the bone?)

When you carve cuttlebone, on the inside it's got those ridges, which is where the texture comes from, it's sort of like tree rings. However, once you cast with it, the inside gets completely burned away, and you have to make a new one.

Oh wow so it DOES get burnt :3 so each cast is unique then as there won't be able to have another one made the same way~
