An old photo of one of my early scratch-built Little Joe II scale models in 1:70 scale. It was made up using plans obtained during a visit to Peter Alway (Sport Rocketry Scale Editor) at his home in Ann Arbor, MI. Contracted Balsa Machining Services to make the Apollo cone. All of the other parts were cut from stock materials, then shaped to the proper profile. Balancing the model required several bits of solid core solder embedded into the solid balsa cone base. Yet, whatever ballast I added was barely enough. Shortly after leaving the launcher under power, the model went sideways for a brief moment before parachute deployment! Quite exciting.
