Speaking of competitive, isn’t Rivalry an ability that’s dependent on the opponent’s gender? Stronger when both are the same, but weaker when they’re different (genderless doesn’t matter either way).

Seeing this framework, Virmir's new teammate, Axew, wouldn't be a direct threat since his ability decreases damage against female Pokémon but increases it against males.
And considering that dragons, despite their flaws, are loyal to their friends and allies for life, Virmir has acquired a white knight who will go head-to-head against anyone who wants to harm her. Only our protagonist will have to put up with it. XD
