This time, I bring you a drawing of Akbal and Luna, the first time I’ve drawn two characters from Luna’s universe.
Akbal is the guardian/queen/empress (whichever you prefer) of the night, the earthly embodiment of the night. She also holds the noble title of Princess of the Unexplored Jungles and serves as the Captain of the Jaguar Guard. Luna, as her name suggests, represents the Moon—but in Luna’s world, seven moons orbit the planet, each with a different name. Luna was named after one of them because she hatched when the moon *Luna* was at its highest point, followed by the other six moons in a stepped formation, creating a pyramid in the sky. Her father saw this as a sign from Dian (Luna’s mother) and chose that name for her. (The name Luna coincidentally matches ours in Spanish.)
*(Note: I took a lot of artistic liberties with these characters. I was inspired by Aztec and Mayan mythology—or a mix of both—and added my own elements. Nothing presented here is meant to be 100% accurate to real history or mythology.)*
Akbal is the “daughter” of the father of all dragons and humans, Quetzalcoatl. She is the Princess of the Unexplored Jungles and the Captain of the Jaguar Guard. She was born alongside her 20 siblings—21 in total—from the leg that Quetzalcoatl’s brother, Tezcatlipoca, lost in his battle against Cipactli. The dragons and half-dragons/humans born from that leg were created as a tribute to his sacrifice. Akbal was chosen to embody the night and to watch over the guardian of the Tree of Life (which I’ll talk about later).
Her mission—though she doesn’t know it—is to protect Luna/Dinae, which is why she feels a strong pull toward her, always wanting to be near her. Because of this, she competes with Kalina and Tiara for Luna’s attention. Of course, Luna always keeps her three guardians close.
Akbal can read the ancient language, which helps Luna locate the Compass (the Compass is a structure).
