Yes, it was. It was the era of the Moon Maid and several other sci-fi-type characters. One of the most interesting things, to me today, was that Dick Tracy had the first wrist telephone. Remember? I was watching someone the other day talking into a wrist telephone and my first thought was, "DAMN! Dick Tracy's two-way wrist radio has come into existence."
Apple even got permission from Tribune to put DT in an ad. The two-way wrist radio, the earliest iteration of a long series of watches Diet Smith Enterprises would improve on, goes clear back to the early 1940s, I believe. And as you imply, it's iconic. I've had him use it a few times in my stories.
