This is a modular Self-Forging Fragmenting Submunition bomb (SFFS), for use on several of my warplane designs.
The Microburst is (ironically) in the upper size range for cluster bomb-type weapons, weighing some 2000lbs. It is unique in that it is a fully modular aerial bomb, with 40 interchangeable submunitions. The 2 main types of warheads are shown in the sketch, a High Explosive Incendiary (HEI) bomblet, and a special High Explosive FRAGmentation (HE-FRAG) bomblet whose blast emits Explosively-Formed Penetrators (EFPs).
The submunitions come in packs of 5 of each type, so it is possible to "tailor" the Microburst to produce a myriad of different effects. The HEI bomblet is best for clearing "soft" targets such as troops, light armor, brick buildings, etc, while the HE-FRAG works best on "hard" targets like heavy armor, pillboxes, bunkers, etc. When mixed, these munitions can be dropped into target aresa filled with both hard and soft targets. Or, it can be fitted with only one type of warhead for best effect Vs. one type of target.
Also note the importance of altimiters in this bomb --- these not only cause the bomblets to spread at the ideal altitude for the best coverage/saturation balance, but also prevent the bomblets from arming if the microburst has been dropped from too low an altitude for the delivery platform to escape (though for extenuating circumstances, these functions are designed to be overridden or modified).
