Did you know that One Piece has its own TCG? And that it kinda plays like a weird crossover of Pokémon, Hearthstone and Magic Commander? Well now you do!
So like any trading card game, the biggest draw right now are the variants of all the different cards out there and the 'energy' DON!! cards are no exception. The heck is a DON!! you may be asking and why is it capitalized like that? Good question! DON!! is a popularly-used sound effect in One Piece (specifically the manga) that's supposed to emphasize a particularly tense or exciting moment. Think of it like someone hitting a wide, bowl-shaped drum fairly hard. Basically that sound. But yeah, DON!! acts as the Energy/Mana of One Piece, being used to tap to play cards or to attach Active DON!! to characters to boost their attack by 1000 each for that turn. You draw and play 1 from the dedicated 10-card DON!! deck at the start of the very first turn and then draw and play 2 for each turn after that. There's a bit more to that, but that's the jist of how it works.
Like land cards in Magic, there are a TON of variations on DON!! cards, most of which depict scenes from the manga. Most of them are pretty dang pricey if you were looking to get anything but the basic white background black text DON!! cards you get in starter decks, which lead to this weird idea I had... Why not just make my own DON!! cards... that are based on people/characters with DON in their name?
Introducing DON!! Set 1 - Unfortunate Start! A 10-card set of DON!! cards depicting some of Google's most iconic first page results from when I typed in 'don' and then a random letter afterwards! Included in the first set, we have:
* DON!! Lemon from when he got really, really drunk during CNN's New Year's Eve back in 2016 and they had to cut his mic off. I added in a moldy sausage because he kinda looks like someone was waving a stanky thing under his nose. [Part of the Moldy Sausage set]
* DON!! King smoking a cigar and somehow catching his afro on fire in the process. I tried to find a nice, 'definitive' pic of Don King's hair, but I went with a younger pic of him because the cigar smoke in the pic was already perfect. [Part of the FLAME DON!! set]
* DON!! Cheadle, the critically-acclaimed, award-winning actor who is best known for his roles in Hotel Rwanda, The Iron Man movies after 1 and the Avengers/Captain America/other Marvel stuff, and of course, his honest depictions of himself in It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia, which is where that screenshot was taken from.
* DON!! Knotts as Barney Fife from The Andy Griffith Show, accidentally shooting his fingers off! You know...... Don Knotts........ Everyone's favourite, current actor..... from the 60's.... and 70's......... *Crickets.*

* DON!! Corneo from Final Fantasy 7, eyeing you up like the cute piece of meat that you are. Speaking of meat, look at how he's gripping that moldy sausage. He's not afraid to handle some smelly old sausage, unlike Lemon... Maybe if you play your cards right and use a walkthrough, you too could be his lucky lady (or gentleman disguised as a lady) for the evening...? * DON!!-atello from one of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle comics getting trolled by a rat. LOL! Epic fail!
Nah but seriously, I have no idea the context for that comic. All I know is that there was a voice in his head that I think he thought was Master Splinter's and it's been messing with him this whole time. I hope the poor guy finds the help he needs...
* DON!! Patch from Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo just... being Don Patch...... yeah, I wouldn't stare at this card for too long, or else you run the risk of it looking back at you......
* DON!! Carmine Falcone from Batman/DC comics getting his face slashed up by Catwoman after all of the shit he put Batman through. Honestly, he's lucky he got off with only a sweet looking scar because if she reached just a little bit further, he'd be Captain Carrrrrrr-mine instead!
........Get it....? B-because he'd... have an eye patch....? Like a pirate....? Yakuza....? [Part of the BRUTALITY!!! set]
* DON!! Quixote getting his own stupid ass and his poor horse caught up in a windmill because the senile old fool thought it was a danggum dragin! Why... back in his day, they used to have dragins as far as the eye could see! Course they weren't called dragins back then... They were called 'Bic lizards!' And we used to use them for everything! Lighting campfires..... lighting..... torches...... mnnnm...... lightin......... ol' wiggle-tooth..... zzzzzzzz.......
WHUAH?! A DRAGIN?!? Let's get 'em!!!
* DON!! Zaloog is a Level 4 Dark Warrior Effect Monster originally from the Dark Beginnings 2/Pharaonic Guardian sets in the Yu-Gi-Oh TCG. It has 1400 ATK and 1500 DEF. Its effect triggers when it inflicts battle damage to your opponent, and allows you to discard a card from your opponent's hand or send the top 2 cards of their deck to the graveyard. Apparently he's also an actual character in the GX anime, even though he's also a card around that time and his deck is centered around himself. Very strange indeed.
Anyways, this is more or less just layer/GIMP practice while I'm away from my actual computer so I don't get rusty. I'm still slowly but surely working on my game, so watch for an eventual alpha demo build of that too.
