As 80s Teen Bucky rocks out on stage, we get a BIG REVEAL here, that he was actually God Old Bucky all along.
The entire 80s universe is revealed to be God Old Bucky’s literal dream world, and his 80s teen self is his avatar, serving as the star in this rom-com musical movie reality.
God Old Bucky accidentally created this reality from his dreams manifesting his subconscious desires and when he initially woke up in this new realm, he didn’t remember his true godly self, but slowly but surely, it’s been coming back to him, with the music show being a major catalyst for him regaining his true memories/identity.
However once he does regain his memories of who he truly is, he is reluctant to let go, not just because this is his idyllic dream world but also because this is the only world that has his parents in it (or rather his version of what he imagines his parents were like) and he doesn’t want to lose them.
Ultimately, he accepts that he has to “wake up” but because he wishes deep in his heart that this world could continue without him, it survives, with 80s Teen Bucky becoming his own entity, and basically, it’s like the movie “ends” with time now moving forward and the universe becoming a true alternate reality rather than a fantasy one.
Afterwards, despite God Old Bucky technically not being part of the 80s Universe anymore, he discovers he can still see through 80s Teen Bucky’s eyes and observe how the world he created is doing and how his alternate self’s life going, which is good enough for him.
