Fall, 1325
Autumn was approaching. The air was turning colder and the leaves were beginning to change color. Thick storm clouds were beginning to accumulate around the Southern Ranges.
Logan was back at the Dancing Wolf, drinking in a corner, listening to the flames crackle in the fireplace, when Charles pulled up beside him, a pitcher of ale in his hand.
“Hello Hunter. I'd like to talk.”
Logan shrugged. “Free town here.”
The Deputy took up the opposite seat. “It's been a few weeks, and the town is getting antsy about you.”
The Hunter sighed. “I'll move on soon enough.”
“Well the town has given you a lot of time and resources.”
“I will come back and pay that debt eventually.”
“You can pay now.”
Logan looked up. “How?”
“With information about the dragon.”
The Hunter downed his mug. “I'm surprised your boss didn't kick me out after I returned.”
Charles refilled the Hunter's cup. “I am only a deputy, but Sheriff Wilcox respects my advice. And I see you as having some value.” The Deputy leaned over. “Do you know why we have continued to pay for your food and board?”
The Hunter stopped. “I do not.”
“Because as far as I can tell, despite your obvious incompetence and failure, you managed to accomplish two things: you found the dragon, and you survived.”
Charles shrugged.
“The Stanton Dragon remains alive to threaten this town due to a single reason: those brave enough to try to kill it are foolish enough to try to do so alone. We are but mice before a cat.”
The Deputy raised a finger in the air. “But- a hundred mice can kill any cat. Heratio Wilcox is the Sheriff of Stanton, and his word is respected. He can raise an army to destroy this monster that has harried our homes for decades. But he can’t do it without knowing the dragon’s home. If he climbs that cursed mountain, the wyrm will spot him coming, and flee or attack while everyone blindly attempts to respond. You have the key to end this. You, you’ve found the dragon’s cave. Together we can flush the monster out, where it’d be forced to defend its hoard and die or abandon the area completely. All you need to do is to tell us how to get there.”
Logan shook his head.
“I made an oath to the dragon not to harm it. I can’t break that after it spared me.”
The Deputy stopped, grimacing.
“Are you certain that this beast talks? No one has ever mentioned that our town demon can speak human.”
Logan sank deeper into his seat.
“I don't know.”
“I don’t think you're crazy, if that is what you're wondering. But I do wonder if the dragon has some magicks. Perhaps it had cast some glamor over your eyes.”
“Perhaps, I don’t know.”
Charles snorted.
“Well, you don’t need to break your oath. Just tell us, and we’ll take care of things.”
“It displays intelligence and mercy. Perhaps I should go and talk to the wyrm again.”
“You're smarter than that. Even supposing you’re right, and the dragon is only speaking to you. What do you hope to accomplish? How does this in any way benefit you, Logan Durham?”
The hunter stared at his mug for a long time.
“It doesn’t.” He finally uttered.
“It does not. Perhaps the dragon is controlling you, using the simplest trick in the book: Guilt. Perhaps it wants to trick you into defending it against your own people. Perhaps if you go back empty-handed, it will just eat you.”
Logan downed the last contents of his mug. “Perhaps.”
The Deputy brought over a pitcher and refilled the Hunter's drink. “Logan, you know me as a friend. I’ve tried my hardest to defend you against the frustrations of Stanton, but I can not do so longer. The people are restless.”
For the first time, the Hunter noticed how many eyes were upon the two of them as they conversed. Alicia, Bidgewell, Brewster, Burles, Charlotte, Edwin, Fink, Timothy, dozens of eyes glared back. Charles gestured toward the crowd of angry townsfolk surrounding them. “I understand you still are trying to sort this whole thing out, but most people can’t see. Help me help you. Give the people something they want. You don’t need to do anything else, just give them the location of the dragon’s den.”
Logan sighed.
“Fine. Give me an empty parchment. I’ll show you the way to hell.”
