Is there a name for the feeling you get when you look at an old photo of someone you've known for a long time, from back when you did know them, but not necessarily as well as you do now? Time has a tendency to flatten perceptions, and the further events recede into the past, the more we see them in broad strokes. People too—we idealize them, either positively or negatively, even when attached to the other end of the cord is the flesh and blood of the present.

No, the times were not simpler. Only your memory of them is.
