I bought this adopt a while ago, without exactly knowing what drew me to the character. While talking about it with
A-Kitsune, he hypothesized that this was Bryce's piano teacher in college. That's when it hit me—This reminds me of my own piano teacher in college! That's what I was seeing in them!
So, needless to say, Aster was not Bryce's piano teacher in college. College was just about 20 years ago for Bryce, and Aster strikes me as younger than him.
Instead Aster is a fellow music instructor at the urban conservatory that Bryce (sometimes) teaches at. A cheetah-tiger hybrid, they run into the caribou quite frequently. Sometimes they have coffee together, talk about their students.
As a minor character, though, Aster's role in the story is defined by their relationship to a major one (Bryce). Aster does remind Bryce of the piano instructor he had in his college days, who was not at all a threatening person from the outside, and very pleasant to get to know... until they got to know you, at which point all your buttons were exposed for them to push. And push them they did. Not for personal gain, nor to belittle or demean, but to goad. To question your competence in a way to get you to prove them WRONG.
"I'd say this piece is right up your alley, but I don't think you're quite ready for it." Etc.
That's who Aster is to Bryce: a goad, albeit in a personal rather than a pedagogical sense. Although Bryce is technically Aster's senior at the conservatory, Aster sees through the bundle of insecurities that is Bryce and encourages him to stop simply lying down under the crushing weight of the world. As the story progresses and weights crushing Bryce start to take on an... otherworldly tone, Aster won't believe a word of it, other than to say "show me."
That's how all the best teachers operate. Complain and make excuses and justify your actions all you want. Get it out of your system. You still know the material. Show me what you're going to do with it.
Other details (like what instruments they play) will work themselves out down the line, I'm sure.
