Clearly this child had been playing too many exciting and violent video games to be much impressed by a five and a half foot tall talking stuffed animal. Yes I went to the panel on fur-suiting and how you are never supposed to hold a child but the conversation went down something like this.
Mother: "Oh my god look Chay Chay! Look!"
Me: *Polite wave without approaching*
Chay Chay: *No discernible response except to glance up at me from his stroller occasionally while enjoying his sucker.*
Mother: "Oh look at him. He's smiling!" *Pointing to the expressionless child.* "Oh Chay Chay, I got to get a picture of you with my baby."
Me: *Nods and kneels down next to the stroller.*
Mother: "Oh no... You gotta Hoooold my baby... Oh look Chay Chay." *Unbuckling the still aloof child.*
Me: *Nervously gets into a position where I can hold him securely as close to the ground as possible, thanking my lucky stars I'm an older brother and camp counselor with a lot of experience when it comes to holding children.*
Random dude: "Girl you don't *know* him! How do you know he's not a rapist or something?"
Mother: "Oh he's not a rapist." *Hands me the child who's sucker immediately sticks to my paw fur.*
Chay Chay: *No expression*
Mother: "Oh look at him smiling!" *taking pictures.*
While it wasn't quite as sweet as the little girl that wobbled up to me for a hug, being my first child interaction in suit, this certainly will stand out in my memory. I am SO SO glad he didn't cry. He was standing around looking up at the rest of the TwinkyArts gang when they left Fernando's and even with their imposing stature and head to toe fur he didn't seem terribly impressed. Oh well.
