I wanted to take some pictures of my parents' garden snails for all the colour variation.
So I walked around picking up some different ones and lined them up. Despite being such slow models, they still didn't like sitting still ;o
Lots of snails had their naps disturbed in the making of this picture. But I dropped them in a pile of dead plants afterwards so I think they're happy. Some of them didn't wake up at all.
Anyway. As far as I can discern there's a few different subspecies of Cepaea nemoralis going on here, but I also suspect they crossbreed - not so much the variation in how banded they are, but because of the hues. It can't really be diet related, since the colour of a snail remains the same year after year (though the glossy colour layer can be worn off, leaving them matte and white).

I'm not sure if they are the same as the ones you describe though as there shell is only get to about the with of a quarter...
basically they look like this...http://images.flowers.vg/1024x768/snail.jpg with the same pattern on pretty much all of them...

Love them! I did the same during our big yard cleanup. I thought this particular flavor was called a Wood Snail.
All I know is I them AND they like to climb my walls and hang out on my mailbox. Great Pic.
P.s. I think I love you for your kindness towards our shy spiral-housed friends here.

Thank you! I have no idea, we literally just call them snails because they are so common, unlike all the other snails which have names - like burgundy ("wine hill") snail, cellar slugs, "killer slugs" (Spanish slug), red/black forest slugs, beach snails (periwinkles), pond snails and pelican's foot, not to mention those tiny tiny ones no one has a common name for. I guess these are yard snails (white lipped snail) and grove snails.
Yes, they are very cute - but sometimes you end up feeling you have to rescue them from your mail box, bird bath, greenhouse windows... x3 I am not sure they thought I was kind. But I did rescue a few from going in the grinder after my dad cut the hedge.
Hmm, there appears to be a "garden snail", large like the burgundy snail, but it's actually not that common in gardens around here. For some reason the small grove snails here are much more colourful.

I just wanna hug it! And yes, my mailbox which is attached to my house and neck high gets a random visitor often. Silly guys, I gotta pluck you off for my own piece of mind. :D
