That's the classical trope. Technically they can still live forever, but it won't prevent them to get a whiplash if they use their powers too much. At this point most of them have pushed on their magic too often for too long without enough faith to help them regenerate it, kind of like an athlete that got hurt but keeps pushing without taking the time to heal.
