More commissioned art, this time by the young, edgy
ArcticLion!
I asked him to illustrate a scene from one of my stories, but was torn between describing the scene in detail (and killing his creativity), or leaving things to chance and possibly getting a totally wrong portrait. In the end I settled for providing some vital details, while leaving as much as I could to Arctic’s imagination.
I was totally satisfied with the result. :) This was my critique of the piece:
Firstly, thanks for doing such a wonderful job on the commission, I can see that you gave a LOT of thought to the character designs and background! I didn’t want to describe them too much (since that might’ve killed your creativity), but you took what I said and developed it so it was better than I imagined!
I love the soldier’s armour! I noticed how you used the same red/black colours from the pilot’s uniform, with extra silver portions for the armour plating. :) I didn’t have any ideas for the armour, and seeing the red/black colours was a nice surprise! It feels very logical, and indicates that the soldier and pilot belong to the same military unit, even though they have different jobs in that unit... I also noticed how you designed the armour so he could actually move: the hinges at the elbow, and the soft black material under the plates where he needs to bend. :)
As always, I love your wardrobe designs (which I think I’ve mentioned on FA): many artists can draw people, but not all of them can create costume designs that do justice to their characters! The old scientist’s outfit makes him look severe (which he is), and his sternness is juxtaposed with the pilot’s laid-back personality – which is why the scientist is wearing a coat in the hot tropical weather, while the pilot has taken his shirt off. :) I can see that you added some extra detail to the pilot’s pants, which is great, and I like how he has brown-coloured fur, but a different brown from the soldier’s! It’s little details like this that make the colours believable: they have their own logic (like the similar red/black of the armour and uniform pants), so someone who looks at the picture can “read” the meaning subconsciously.
The background is better than anything I expected... I love the alien-looking trees (which are still recognisable as tropical plants), and the general landscape. Overlapping the characters with leaf shadows is a nice touch, it draws them into the environment. The soldier seems to be standing on some paving-stones, a sign that there are artificial structures in the area, like the temple they’re looking for... Are those steps in the upper-left corner, next to the barrel of his gun?
Again, thanks for giving so much thought and effort to this picture! :)
