this is nothing, I mean, lots of cultures have similar things as rites of passage, rituals etc. so not much pain if you block it our, look at suspending, same thing, people put themselves in a trance and feel no pain from it, and slight to no blood

it's all about science and psychology, pain is just an impulse of a reaction from the target point to the brain, to not feel pain, you just train your mind to block that impulse.

it also applies to anesthesia, you can have open heart surgery, small surgery, amputations, without any pain killers or anything, from being unconcience. Because the brain is basicly sleeping, it goes into a mode where the subconscience takes over, so your brain doesn't tell you about the pain, cause the brain itself doesn't recognize pain
