Well we can never in game form as oppose to Shadow, Sonic characters just don't have strong familiar bonds like that. For instant, Sonic says Tails is his best friend but when have they ever share a meal together, or laugh at funny joke, or mourn the lost of a beloved friend. Never, at least in the game continuity. Sure they are there for each other, but SEGA neglect to show the humanity in these talking animals. I will never forget the episode of Sonic Satam where Sonic fail to save Uncle Chuck and Sally and Bunnie had to console him. It show that even though Sonic is just unbreakable hero, he still can faulter. I guess SEGA of Japan just want him always happy and just smile at all time like a robot. I guess SEGA are the true Robotnik in the Sonic universe.
Yeah, a big mistake for Dr. M when he called the shot for the roboticized Jules to be executed as a demonstration for what happens when Sonic doesn't stand down, but he should have thought of more ways to break Sonic's will and spirit, such as going after Sonic's friends and other active members of Sonic's immediate family.
Sly might be right, a tactical retreat might be in order as Sonic is very well outmatched in a fight, especially without the Chaos Emeralds in possession.

Except for the fact that he has badly hurt his hands trying to bust through the barrier to save his father, only to no avail as he watched as he was brutally shot down by Clockwerk. Sonic won't stand a chance in that state, especially not without the Chaos Emeralds in possession.
