“Human, I advise we take this path here.” The powerful warrior gestured to the slightly winding path leading into the forest. “It is the safest one available from this area.”
“R-Right…yeah, I understand.”
A traveler from far away lands had heard tales of this forest. It was a massive expanse of flora, most of which remained undocumented. Both curious and excited at the prospect of all the new information he could bring to his colleagues, he’d attempted to search the forest by himself. This plan, of course, turned out to be a mistake. Multiple times he had gone into the maze of trees, and each time, he’d gotten lost. Managing to escape hadn’t been an easy affair—especially during his last expedition—and he was on the verge of giving up on the research and going home.
Just as he rested on the ground, giving a sad sigh, a large shadow suddenly loomed over him. He looked up, only to see Saramathra. Much like the forest, he’d heard tales of her as well. The large, powerful, blue frame of a woman…long, purple hair and piercing eyes…and to some, the perfect outfit of little more than a pinkish-orange bra and matching long shirt that draped down to her calves. On the verge of passing out, he could do little more than stare at her in surprise and awe.
“Human. You’ve been entering the jungle and getting lost multiple times.” She stated. “It is not safe in there.”
“Y-Yeah…” He sighed, “...I’ve figured that out…”
The air filled with silence for several seconds before Saramathra continued. “I will accompany you. I know the forest well and can assist you. I do not wish for you to continue to get lost in there.”
He looked up into her eyes. “W-Wait… really?”
After a bit of clarification between the two, Saramathra upheld her statement, willing to lead him through the forest. The traveler, however, wasn’t as convinced. It would be wonderful to have a guide who knew the terrain well enough to prevent either of them from getting lost or hurt… but he couldn’t help but feel as if she was doing this act against her own will. Saramathra’s demeanor and tone simply seemed unimpressed with him, and if that were true, wouldn’t she just leave him?
The tough warrior, for her own part, actually did want to help him because it was the right thing to do. Although she’d never heard any reports about anyone ending up lost for good in the forest, she could easily see it happening. A traveler there simply to learn more about the place didn’t deserve to be stranded out in the forest. They were both already here, so why shouldn’t she help him?
Only recently did Saramathra realize her stature and manner of speaking might naturally intimidate others. To her, this might be a chance to erase some of that perception. Truthfully, she wished she was naturally more approachable. It did make her a bit nervous, attempting it, but the wolf-like warrior was trying to seem more socially inclined, not weak. Still, she hardly knew this traveler, so Saramathra felt it best to take this ‘more friendly’ persona nice and slow.
While traveling through the forest, there was an awkward silence broken only by the birds and insects around them. Not wanting to continue the strange feeling, Saramathra spoke up.
“Human, what do you know about this forest? Are you aware of all the dangers here?”
Blinking, the traveler responded. “I know there are several kinds of poisonous plant life in this forest, but not any dangerous animals… right?” He asked, no longer convinced.
“There is far more than dangerous plants out here,” She responded, “things even I have not seen, such as—”
Schlorph!
In the time it took for Saramathra’s eyes to look down, her legs were sucked under by the ground, making her look curiously at the earth.
“Huh? What is…”
Before she could finish her thought aloud, Saramathra stopped, eyes going wide. Acting partially on instinct, her hands rose up, not daring to grab at her legs. Instead, she remained perfectly still, looking down in a curious shock at the messy earth. Even with her cautious nature, the substance continued to slowly pull her deeper, sinking Saramathra down to her knees… and then even further, halfway down to her things as she gave a soft, inaudible gulp.
Surely…this cannot be…but…is it…?
She was certain… it had to be what she was sinking in, but… was it really out here? In all her years, never had she actually seen it out here… until now…
Her traveling companion, having walked behind her, had luckily come to a stop, backing up a few steps as he also looked at Saramathra’s sinking form, giving a gasp.
“Wait! Be careful, th-that’s…!”
