After falling and injuring his leg, Pete thought for sure he was done for. He doubted his companion, the untrustworthy Venomian pilot Lilith, would come to his aid. With the pain in his broken leg nearly unbearable, Pete began to wonder if he should let himself starve to death, or end it himself now to spare himself from the prolonged suffering.
However, much to his astonishment, Lilith returned with some long wire they had salvaged from what was left of their ships. She climbed down to him and tied the wire around his legs and waist into a makeshift harness. Then, being careful, she helped him to his feet, climbed back up the short cliff wall, and began pulling him up. Pete was surprised at just how much stronger Lilith was than she looked. It took perhaps an hour of painful and exhausting effort from both of them, but eventually, Pete was able to grab hold of Lilith's hand, and she pulled him the rest of the way up to safety. As they sat there for the next few minutes, resting and catching their breath, Pete stared at Lilith in bewilderment. This enemy solder, who up till now he had written off as nothing but an untrustworthy monkey criminal, had just saved his life.
Lilith then turned her head to look at him and simply said, "Now we're even."
Pete Shepherd and Lilith Macaco are my own original characters and are owned by me.
