Character design - Cinnabar
Gem design for ZappySapphy, based upon the real life cinnabar specimen in her collection! The last of a batch of four gem designs she commissioned us ;)
Real cinnabar is toxic, and made up of sulphur and mercury, which are toxic substances themselves, hence this character being a fusion with some pretty menacing traits. Real cinnabar was used both as make-up by Ancient Romans and to make lacquered vases during the Song Dynasty, which inspired respectively the red markings on their face and the motifs on their body. Overall, designing Cinnabar was a blast!
