Yes there was a logical reason that the orange kitty with black spots was not there when Nick was introduced to the others. Pepper, she's the medical expert in the group. No, it's not a full joke. She's not a great... expertise, but she knows basic first aid and does work as a doctor temp.

Aww, poor Pepper, Nick doesn't seem too friendly towards the calico, does he? I know this one's colouring turned out crappy, I used white out and it screwed the picture up when I tried to colour it. >.>
