CuteGirlTober Day 25 - Yami Kawaii - Sketch
Day 25 of CuteGirlTober2024 turned fashion study - Yami Kawaii
Another Japanese style. Yami basically means dark. It's also used for depression. And Kawaii means cute. This style came out of yumi kawaii which is basically a cutesy, almost dreamy kinda style. But this one is a bit darker, both literally and metaphorically, while still overall having a cute vibe.
Which, yami kawaii can get pretty dark due to the nature of focusing on mental health. Depression and mental health are often historically taboo topics and this pushes back against it. And it ranges from cute bandages and pill themed bracelets to razor blades with hearts on them as a bracelet. Yeaaaaah.
So, obviously, there's a bit of controversy with this style. While use it as an expression of their own struggles with mental health or a light-hearted way to open up about a serious subject, there are concerns (sometimes valid) about the idea of "glorifying" self-harm and things. There's one vent comic that's a bit infamous that's tied to this style that has a lot of back and forth discussion about this.
I personally kept it on the more light-hearted side of things. One, I didn't want to sweat posting on here (even though FB is weirdly okay with things sometimes?) or making trigger warnings. But also, I personally am not as okay with the darker stuff. So finding that balance for drawing and pushing a little past my comfort zone was an interesting challenge.
I do like the shirt, though. And I have another, similar shirt design in mind. I may seriously draw them both up sometime, haha. And yes, I saw a real pastel-colored medical bracelets for sale while looking up accessory ideas, haha.
And a pitbull girl this time. One, pitties are a great mix of scary (according to some) and adorable. I ... did not mean for her entire vibe to be kinda anxious but I love it and I adore her and promise to protect her forever, haha.
