while Plato claimed he learned of the place from someone who had been to egypt and learned the legend there, the description he gives is very greek in details. indeed in most ways the culture of atlantis is described by him as matching the athens of his own time. often specifically called out as such (such as in relation to the lifestyle of its people and the religious details)
probably because he was making up a morality story, depicting his own athens as decadent and weak by way of allegory (it is notable that the ancient version of athens that atlantis fights and loses to in his story, are basically spartans but with the philosopher-kings that plato loved so much.. basically combining the two things that he'd been telling people are superior to the society that already existed in Athens)
