I just commissioned ref sheets for two new characters and along came something I didn't plan for.
He's a wooly rhino, so he's undoubtedly connected to Victor. But what is he?
A rival? A romantic interest? He doesn't strike me as either. Someone suggested "spiritual advisor" but that field is also crowded.
I don't think he's necessarily "good" or "evil." My sense of him is of the strong-willed but morally neutral type.
So off the top of my head:
In Victor's time, true "specialists" were rare. Whatever knowledge and skills a person had were meant to be shared with the tribe—except when that knowledge rose far above the norm. Wisdom imparted by the gods could not be spread carelessly, for one cannot give what one does not own.
So from time to time families with "secret" knowledge arose. Divination techniques were passed down through the Seer's family, for example.
This wooly rhino, then, is a weapons-maker. An exceptionally skilled one, maybe even a primitive metalworker. A "blacksmith" before blacksmiths existed.
That would make him a rival to Victor—an ideological one. Victor only abides using primitive weapons, and even then only to supplement what nature gave him.
I wonder if he and Emmet would have anything to talk about, if they met.
Or it's an entirely different story. In any event he needs a name and a full design to be useful.

I think he'll remain calm and wise-looking no matter what he ends up as. In most circumstances.
