One of the things I did not long after I turned 18, was becoming a Volunteer Fire Fighter. I was with Reliance Hook & Ladder, Company No. 61 out of Boothwyn PA. Sadly, the station closed back in late 2020 and was merged with Companies 40 and 55 into Upper Chichester Fire Department No. 10.
As a result, I've made Dakara a "Truckie". His story is that he started in Crash Fire Rescue for the USAF. After doing 6yrs there, he was discharged honorably, and joined Station 19 working the Engine.
After a bad DUI call involving his older sister, her husband, and second child... he couldn't bring himself to pry people out of mangled cars again. Especially since he could do nothing for his sister. Worse yet, the drunk guy that hit her car showed no remorse... to the extent his very expensive lawyer decided to ditch his client, and leave him with a 20yr stint in the CA State Prison with no chance of parole.
He was transferred to Station 45, which is mainly built around interior and exterior operations for buildings (and the odd car fire). Here, he would reconnect with Irshi, his High School sweetheart, and eventual wife. After some work on engine, and the tragic loss of their mutual friend Ighos (who their son would be named for), Dakara was promoted to Lieutenant, and put in charge of Truck 45.
In this image, Dakara embodies the attitude he has towards leadership. He will not ask others to do anything he isn't willing to do himself. Especially in this fire where the conditions inside the structure were quickly apparent to be really bad. On arrival, he ordered that no one was to go in, and his Truck quickly scaled the roof with Dakara at the lead. Propping an axe at the peak, he immediately began sawing into the roof, releasing thick khaki colored smoke. For those unaware, this color smoke is a clear external warning sign for backdraft conditions.
What is a backdraft? The simple answer is a condition where the heat and fuel inside a spare are the right mix, but there's not enough oxygen for combustion. If a door or window is opened, air rushes in, completes the mix, and the ensuing mixture reacts explosively. Seriously injuring, or killing, anyone that's in the way. Even bunker gear will not save someone that's standing in front of that blast. What are the warning signs? Simple:
- Charred black windows
- Brownish or Khaki colored smoke
- Expansion and contraction (breathing) of the doors, windows, or walls.
- Wispy smoke from small cracks
- Smoke appearing under a door, and rapidly going back into the room
- Doors and windows are extremely hot to the touch.
Needless to say, if any of you see those signs... do not enter that room.
So. At the same time as this image is being uploaded, I'm happy to announce a new sale going on at my Square store. All 2D art is 25% off for anything under $100, and everything over $100 is 50% off!
