I used to be an ordinary chef, cooking and preparing meals at a shop that paid me little to no respect. My employer never saw the effort I put into my dishes, never acknowledged the long hours I spent making sure every plate was perfect. To them, I was just another set of hands in the kitchen that could be easily replaced if I didn't follow any orders. It was frustrating, to say the least, but I endured it. Cooking is what I love, and I wasn't going to let a thankless job take that away from me.
After months of cooking for that place, I ultimately got fired for accidentally missing a topping on a customer’s order. Good riddance honestly. I never liked how badly the place treated me anyway. I spent a couple weeks on my computer searching for a new place to work, but none of them offered even a decent amount of pay, let alone any respect. I was about ready to give up when an ad popped up on the website I was viewing. I almost closed out of it until it mentioned “FACILITY STAFF FOR HIRE, LOOKING FOR A PERSONAL CHEF.” From the screenshots though, it seemed like a pretty big facility. Everything looked organized and well thought out. It was apparently owned by a shoebill named Dr. Stenfort but that's besides the point, the most important thing about this ad was that they were willing to pay well, provide top quality ingredients, and most importantly, offer a fresh start with creative freedom with the food.
I could not pass it up.
When I first stepped into Stenfort’s facility, I realized this was nothing like the old place I’d worked at before. The atmosphere was different and colder, yet somehow alive. The halls stretched on longer than they should, the lighting felt... off, and the staff spoke about things that made my stomach churn. Incidents. Creatures. Names I had never heard of but were spoken with a mix of sincerity and caution. After a quick job interview I was accepted into the position almost immediately, strange but I don't mind.
My first day in the kitchen was overwhelming considering how BIG and filled it was with different tools and ingredients... I had expected to cook for the usual crowd of scientists, researchers, security teams. But reality quickly set in when I was also tasked with preparing meals for entities known only as The Incidents. Creatures and beings that defied all logic, each with their own bizarre dietary needs. Yet, despite the strangeness of it all, one thing became clear...
Everyone loved what I did.
From the lowest-ranked worker to Stenfort himself, they all appreciated my cooking in a way I had never experienced before. Compliments weren’t just empty words here; they were genuine. For the first time in my career, I felt like more than just a kitchen hand. I felt valued. This place, as strange and chaotic as it was, might just be where I truly belonged. Nixan was one of the incidents who always kept a smile, honestly when other workers said he is such a joy to be around it is true he's very helpful at times around the kitchen when stenfort allows him to roam around the facility every now and then.
