So someone wanted a tail, but their character's got spiky scales, so this is a test for them. I'll move this to scraps pretty soon.
From bottom to top, there's:
standard weave for comparison
weave with every scale turned backwards so they stick out
every other scale turned backwards, with under each backwards one a brown scale
every other scale turned backwards
every scale turned backwards with a brown scale under it
I'd had high hopes for the one in the middle, but sadly it ended up acting strangely. It ends up just pushing the backwards scale in a random direction. The top one could have been cool I thought, if the one on bottom showed through along the edges, but it ended up that the scale underneath gets pulled up higher than the one on the top, so you never see it.
I'm going to recommend the variant where every scale is turned backwards, or the one with every other scale backwards also worked.

Wow, I really like the mid section where the brown scales are visible underneath... with a flat center ridge, and backwards scales on either side of the center. That looks fantastic! YOu said it doesn't work because it pushes the backwards scales in random directions... looks fine to me.
