So, my dog had a litter of 9 puppies early Sunday morning. Unfortunately, she's too large to be kept in an apartment building, so my dad's been taking care of her until I can get into an actual house with a backyard.
Anyways, had the pups Sunday but it wasn't until late Monday evening that they noticed she wasn't feeding them. We're unsure if it was due to the extreme heat we've been having down here lately. By this time, though, it was too late for seven of the pups. One (the one pictured above) was later found in a large patch of weeds and was then taken inside to be bottle fed. They were unable to find the other.
Now, seeing as I work from home, it made more sense for me to bring the puppy home so I can easily bottle-feed him as frequently as he needs it. So, my question for anyone reading this..... any suggestions on the how to care for this little one? As you can see from the picture, he is quite small and this will be my first time caring for a puppy from birth and I'm a little unsure of myself.
At the moment, as it was the only thing we could get on short notice, I've got together a small mixture of evaporated milk and water. Going to PetSmart a little later today to see about getting something a little better suited for newborns. But, any suggestions or ideas on caring for Papi would be greatly appreciated.
Btw, we named him Papi solely due to him being born on Father's Day.
And for any who are interested in knowing the breed....he's pretty much a mutt. Mother is a pitbull/retriever/bassett hound mix while the father is a shih tsu/chihuahua mix. Don't ask how that short thing was able to get her pregnant, we're still trying to figure that one out.

You'll have to feed him every two to three hours for the first two weeks, then every four for the next two/three. You will have to stimulate him to urinate and defecate by rubbing a warm, moist paper towel/washcloth on his genitals and anus, too, before and after feeding. Keeping him warm is a must - a draft can kill a puppy very quickly. I'd suggest a heating pad underneath a nice thick towel, set on a low setting, or even a hot water bottle (obviously not hot-hot, but warm) under a thick towel as well, inside a short basket or plastic container should be fine. Just make sure he doesn't get cold.
As for how much to feed - the formula you obtain for him should say how much. I'd recommend getting a small bottle with measurement marks on it, as well, and to keep track of when and how much he eats.
I can not stress enough for you to not hold him on his back as you feed him. The food can go through to his lungs and drown him if you hold him this way. Instead, feed him with him laying on his belly, like he would crawl up to momma.
As for the mom getting knocked up by daddy... well, if she's in heat, she's going to want it. If she's in heat - he'll gladly give it to her if she's even laying down on the floor at his height. I'd suggest spaying/neutering them so it doesn't happen again, especially since she seems to not want to care for pups. Even if you just choose to get her fixed, as long as you can control him (since he's small, and I'm assuming an inside dog, this should be really easy), then everything should be fine.
Good luck!

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll definitely be keeping these in mind while caring for him.
As for fixing the mother, I am looking into that. However, the main reason we found it odd that she wasn't caring for them is because this is the first litter she's done this too. The last couple she was real good about taking care of the pups for the first few weeks that they needed her. It's part of the reason why we think the heat may have had a hand in it. Every other litter she's had were all in the winter. But I will definitely see about getting her fixed. Can't do much about daddy since he doesn't really belong to me.
Again, though, thanks for the tips, I'll probably be posting more pictures over the next few weeks to show his growth.
