Funniest possible outcome I think would be the elf saying.
"Oh! Yeah, sure, happens all the time around these parts. I've been a kobold six or seven times now, heck half the town have been kobolds at some point or another."
And he actually means it. Like the town is somehow 'kept' by their former owner also and it's a town secret that everyone who 'escapes' ends up there and can revert to their original species again but only at the cost of remaining in the town.
