TRANSCRIPT

The blood trail was long since staunched, but the footprints remained. I saw this trail lead up a ledge, so I went around to observe from another angle.

About 200ft in front of me was a trio, dimly lit in this dark day by the light of cigarettes. One was bandaged on his right side. These were the right people.

Slowly, I put down my backpack and grabbed my rifle. Laying prone and my rifle in position, spare mags at hand, I waited for my chance to strike. I needed to be quick as the flash of my gun will alert them of my precise location.

After a few minutes, my opportunity came. They turned on a small light as the able-bodied grunt rummaged around in his backpack. I aimed at the leader, and fired. He dropped quickly, and the backpack grunt immediately after. Didn't even have time to reach for their gun. But the injured one did, and shot back, but nowhere close to me. It's difficult to see anything in a dark day, but in the faint light I could see his head jolt away in a red mist.

As I was getting up on my feet, the leader jolted upright, shotgun in hand. I kept my rifle raised, so I beat him to the trigger. This time, I added another bullet for good measure.

Carefully I approached to ensure the deed was done.

They were dead. And I took stock of what they had on them. A good chunk of food, most of questionable ediblity but there was enough good stuff to add a couple of days to my supplies. In addition, they did have some valuables, about 700c and some trinkets.

As for the weapons, the pistols were in bad condition, but were similar STEEL pistols like mine, so I'll see later tomorrow when the daylight comes back to check if any parts is worth salvaging.

What did catch my eye was the shotgun, worn but looks functional. Maybe I'll see if a gunsmith can work on this.
