One of my two submissions for the III International Contest of Scientific Illustrations of Dinosaurs, held in Spain.
This is an Iguanodon fittoni taking a walk along a calm lakeside done on A4 paper. This drawing, even though it did not win, has to be the best thing I've ever done. I'm extremely happy and proud of it, just having drawn this in itself was worth entering that contest :)
As I said before: I didn't win the contest, and after seeing the three illustrations that placed, I really had no chance at all XD The works that won are amazing, but I'm still happy to have been able to work out these two drawings of my own. I'm very pleased with them even if they didn't win :)
EDIT: Since people have been asking, you can find the winners of the contest here!: http://fundaciondinosaurioscyl.blog.....-concurso.html
First place is on top, second below it, and third at the bottom :) If you click the thumbnail of the first place painting at the end of the entry, you can see the rest of the submitted illustrations that did not make it as well :)

I've been in similar situations before, where I entered a contest not really expecting to win because of the sort of people I knew I'd be going up against. In those cases it's always a thrill for my work to be displayed alongside that of true professionals, even if I can't expect to win. In your case, you had the honor of John Sibbick, Raul Martin, Mark Hallet etc. looking at your work, considering it, and judging it. That's pretty awesome in an of itself. And I really admire your attitude about how the contest inspired you to push yourself to the limit and produce something really magnificent, and that you think it was worth it for that alone even if you didn't win. That ROCKS. And I totally agree. Anything that causes a person to produce something beyond their current understanding of their ability is fantastic, an almost sacred quality of human creativity.
Anyway, I already gushed about how much I love this to you on AIM, but I suppose it doesn't hurt to reiterate. I always admire your ability to blend Prismacolor markers really effectively, and this is probably the best example of that I've seen from you so far. The blending gives it a watercolor-like quality that I absolutely cannot squeeze out of my own markers, so I am impressed. xp The clean lines and detail in the background are stunning as well; it's very interesting to see what you can do with a background when you're motivated to do it. I know it's a lot of work, but I hope to see more backgrounds from you in future art. The anatomy is great, clearly you put a lot of effort into attention to accuracy. The animal looks real and lifelike, and as though it has real mass - you definitely avoided the "2D paper dinosaur cutout" style that Greg Paul has popularized. Beautiful work all around, and sorry for the tl;dr comment.

Thank you so much, that wasn't tl;dr at all :)
I was very excited that the contest was judged by such amazing artists to begin with, I think that was one of the main prompters for me to get up and do it.
Backgrounds are definitely something I will be doing more of, just sparingly because they can be expensive XD I had to replace 10 or 12 markers after this picture which is about $40 9_6 I really appreciate your kind words about my marker work :) It makes me feel really proud and it makes me feel like it has been worth it to invest into a medium that isn't used as often as paints or digital. Which I want to learn as well! But hearing good things about all the work I put into learning how to use them in different ways and stuff really really makes me so happy. Thank you :)
And yeah I studied the hell out of Iguanodon skeletons XD XD

The highest compliment I can give this picture is that if I were a publisher looking for someone to illustrate a children's book, I would offer you a job immediately, without hesitation. This is indeed your greatest work in virtually all aspects: The coloring and blending of those colors is phenomenal, the line and ink work are of perfect quality, and all the little details add up to create what is easily your best picture yet. Awesome, awesome job!
