One of my two submissions for the III International Contest of Scientific Illustrations of Dinosaurs, held in Spain.
Done on A4 paper, this is a Baryonyx walkeri running along a lightly flooded mudflat I guess? This was not the better of the two drawings I did.
I didn't win the contest, and after seeing the three illustrations that placed, I really had no chance at all XD The works that won are amazing, but I'm still happy to have been able to work out these two drawings of my own. I'm very pleased with them even if they didn't win :)
EDIT: Since people have been asking, you can find the winners of the contest here!: http://fundaciondinosaurioscyl.blog.....-concurso.html
First place is on top, second below it, and third at the bottom :) If you click the thumbnail of the first place painting at the end of the entry, you can see the rest of the submitted illustrations that did not make it as well :)

Awww, even then, I dunno' I just like this art more, it still shows the animal and how it looked/behaved but yeah, I guess science wants every scale rendered with toothpicks in order to be accurate, that's something to strive for. I like the fact that your stuff stands out in the sea of dino art. Out of curiosity do they have a web page were you can see the other entries? *headtilts*
I want to be able to draw in such a realistic way, but honestly I would keep drawing this way too. I like how I draw, except the things I want to specifically improve XD
And no, not right now, the winners were emailed to the people who entered.
I was told that there would be an announcement of the results on the website, maybe they will post all the entries there as well? ....there were over 160 entries though, so that is a lot XD

But which ones are the winners?, they didn't label them as such D: (even though I have one suspicion for a prize winner)

Never mind, I found a blog post pointing to the winners!, it's in Spanish

I think because I didn't enter the contest expecting to win... sure I had my hopes up, but I could never expect something like that. If it had happened I would have been extremely happy - but I'd have to earn it! I know my art skills are... more fleshed out than many people's, but I am nowhere near a professional level at this point and I know it.
I guess another thing is that even though I didn't win anything, it was still worth it to me because I did draw the best thing I've ever drawn in my life (to this point) and that would have never happened if I hadn't been inspired to enter the contest in the first place. How can I be bitter and jealous of a prize I wasn't expecting to win, when I got a great prize anyway? :3

WRONG.
That should say
One of my two DRAWINGS FOR BOWRLL BECAUSE SHE LOVES BARYONYX SO MUCH.
Dude even if you didn't win, it's still a kick-ass piece. You should frame it or sell it or something! I'd love to have something like that displayed on my wall <3<3 I especially love the ragged neck, it makes it so visually interesting! I also love how you drew the upper jaw, it's tricky to do with that weird crocodilian mouth, but you pulled it off well!
The only critique I'd have is that the front foot doesn't seem to be *in* the mud, it kinda looks like it's on top of it, rather than being all squishy-squishy between the toes.
Hahaha I was hoping you especially would like this one :) Baryonyx is one of the dinosaurs found in Spain I guess where the Fundation of Dinosaurs is located (they were holding the contest) so I thought it'd be a great candidate to illustrate - but I admit I was thinking about you the whole time XD
I'm not sure if I do want to sell this, or the Iguanodon, maybe someday - but they are absolutely getting framed. It's not often I frame my own work, but I'm just so proud XD
And I agree about the mud! I had envisioned it to be a brief but strong summer rain that pelted over a dry mudflat that had barely gotten a chance to sink in... so when the water splashes up from running animals it would appear almost like agate where it's coloured, but still transparent and shiny. I completely agree though, it just looks like he's walking on water :P MY VISION IT DID NOT PAN OUT lol

http://fundaciondinosaurioscyl.blog.....-concurso.html the winners are posted here, in order from first to third :) (the thumbnail of the 1st place illustration links you to the rest of the entries in an album.) :)
Thank you very much, I know I keep saying it, but I'm just so proud of these drawings and I'm happy to have even drawn them at all :3

*smiles* Even for a scientific contest your style is completely there, look, even the supple slightly plump toes are there, looking cute
I can see why you didn't win, but I see why you feel like a winner, you've repeatedly stated that you don't do backgrounds, either because they're difficult, take too long, or don't look well in the end. But between this and the other background (and the one in that old Sepp picture that I didn't comment in) it shows how much you've improved.
I also can see how encouraging it is when someone points us out how well we did on the technical level because --you sure know-- most people gravitate toward the smut, even if you don't feel particularly happy with your own results (Macro Atrox anyone?).
So if I may say it... marvelous work!, you did brilliant, and if one day you 'progress' to hyperrealism in the future, please never forget 'the old days' when you did those naive, happy, smooth shapes and called them dinos, gryphons and sergals, those are unmistakably your style, one that is unique and I love to the depths of my heart, no one does it like you.
Congratulations for winning.

God that is such a sweet comment ;_;
I'm glad people understand that I really didn't deserve to win the contest but I'm still happy with the results :) The people who did win deserved it immensely!
I hope to one day really fine tune my skills so I CAN illustrate on such a level as the winners, for example, but I never want to stop drawing in the way I do now. I just enjoy it way too much!
And yeah, it's kind of funny - I could draw the most uninspired furry smut with no technical skill involved and no real effort, but just so long as it looks good enough people will be all over it on this website! I don't mind, obviously, or else I just wouldn't post :P But with these two dino pics I worked my ass off on like nothing else I've ever done, I've gotten so much less favourites or comments between the two than said pieces of smut XD Which lol of course I understand. I'm posting these on what is essentially a porno site, I'm not complaining :3 It's just kind of silly I guess :P I don't expect a ton of asspats and comments, I just enjoy positive feedback on things I'm proud to show to my friends online!

Yes! You can view the first, second, and third placing illustrations here: http://fundaciondinosaurioscyl.blog.....-concurso.html And if you click the thumbnail of the first place painting at the bottom of that entry, you can see the rest of the submitted artwork that did not place :)
