so after my most recent redesign for Kat went over relatively well, I decided to show my various designs for Kat over the years, as well as some commentary for my thought process for each one.
- oh man it's been nearly a decade since I made Kat's very first design, I originally didn't even plan on posting my art here, I just made Kat as a sona to be used for commissions, but one thing led to another and eventually I put a lot more into Kat in terms of design, backstory etc. I incorporated the tumblr nose for this and the next design because I thought it looked cool at the time, also fun fact- Kat wasn't originally a hybrid, he didn't have feline ears under his big goofy hat, and his tail was a fake one attached to his belt.
- When I got serious about putting characteristics into Kat I always wanted him to be a thief, and this was my next attempt at giving Kat a better outfit. The idea for Kat's outfits throughout the years is that he wears darker colors to better blend into the shadows, also Kat still doesn't have real feline ears, the cloak hood ears were inspired by Taokaka and Jubei from Blazblue, and I gave him a tonfa as a weapon because I think they're cool, even if they are tricky to use and master.
- I continued the trend of Kat having goggles from the last design, but now Kat is a bona fide feline hybrid complete with cat ears and a tail. From this design onward I gave Kat gloves to wear since they make sense for a thief to wear, and I also gave Kat a scarf that I'm admittedly still somewhat fond of since it has personalized feline ends to it.
- This is the design for Kat I used the most back when my series "Crossing Over"was called "Adventurous Anthros", It's pretty simple, but I did give Kat a clover shaped charm for a storyline I never ended up fully exploring, also this is the only version of Kat that I never made a reference pic for.
- and here's the design for Kat that stuck around the longest, as you can see I veered more towards dark brown instead of black or a lot of different shades of grey, and I gave him a more personalized tee shirt, I always liked in manga when the mangaka takes the time to draw their characters in casual clothing that reflected their characters interests, it's a little sad to finally retire this design, but I think I struck gold with Kat's most recent design.
- my MO during the last couple of months for 2024 was to make my character designs a lot more simple and do more with less so to speak, and it followed me into 2025, I did ultimately decide to finally stop giving Kat's hair highlights, but I think this design turned out great, hope you guys are looking forward to seeing more of this design.
