Still over their heads, they are assisting the animal warden in a second hoarding case that's even bigger, three hundred rats pulled so far. The police didn't have anywhere to put them so stacked them in the attached garage, and didn't have even basic supplies. MRR donated waterbottles and went out there to show them how to handle the rats and has slowly helped disseminate them to different shelters since they cannot take any more rats. They're super pretty, all blazes, beiges and even black-eyed-whites!
The ones from the original rescue that I had posted about are being adopted out slowly. I'm going to be fostering some of them once I return from Anthrocon next week. I've been moving and out of touch save for sneaking glances on Facebook, but now we're a bit more settled.

Are they high-white? That's the only way I know of to get BEW, otherwise it's usually something else just very dilute, like silver which can be very pretty =3
I love BEWs (especially rescues <3) but they can be a risky color to breed on purpose due to megacolon. There's no way to breed that risk out of it since the gene that causes it is the same, just slightly different expression. Similar to double-merle in dogs or lethal-white in horses. I mean, I know that it's a *risk*, not a given, but I'm uncomfortable with purposely breeding for aesthetics that risk health. I like the color, but i actually have written letters to rat-clubs before asking them to stop recognizing it, down under, and odd-eye as a breeder categories since I feel (given the risk) it's unethical to breed for and ultimately detrimental to the rat fancy. Too many rescue babies from high-white litters die of it and that saddens me.
Rexes are awesome, I haven't owned or fostered one yet but they're on my list of colors/breeds that I'd like to have in my cage some day (because rats are totally like pokemanz?) I end up with a lot of PEWs and hoodeds since they're more common in rescue. I think my favorite color is probably wild-type agouti though <3

Oh the BEW was a surprise, first one out of all the babies we've ever had in 6 years, we weren't even expecting any white ones, since dad is a berk and mom is capped/hooded/blazed. As for a coat color on the possible BEW. . . I haven't noticed any color, but I do look fo it everyday. We have one who looks like maybe a silverish color, or an aqouti color. You mention loving the wild agouti . .I need to take a pic of my Gandalf you will love him, he is such a squish!
*momma when she was a baby- http://www.furaffinity.net/view/414...../#cid:43647223
( I also have a pic up of her and the babies, though you can't see her face very well)
*Daddy when he was younger-http://www.furaffinity.net/view/5981485/
And thanks for the heads up about the health issues with BEW!

I'd love to see him, agouti cutie's are awesome =3
No problem. Actually it's a gene that causes blazes in many rats it affects, and looking at the blaze on the mom is probably an expression of "high-white." I know because of the jagged edges, recessive blaze genes tend to be symmetrical. BEW is just a different expression of the same gene. Here's an awesome article on it:

Please don't let it scare you too much. Just make sure to know the signs, any of the babies with "odd" white markings (abnormal for berk/hoodie/etc) are at risk, and I have my fingers crossed for ya. it's not super common, but it's not rare either.
