Like a number of monsters in 22nd-century North America, Nōchtli possesses magical powers. He specifically uses water, and can manipulate its form into a sheet (shown here), a blob, or a surging mass. Its lethality comes from its ability to hold shape around an opponent's head, depriving them of air until they surrender or drown.
In New Aztlán, there are strict rules around magic usage, often determined case-by-case by the connotations of the power according to the state religion. Warfare is still mostly conducted hand-to-hand with no magic. Nōchtli only develops the lethality of his powers after his banishment from New Aztlán and debut as an arena fighter in Texas. There is no arena fighting in New Aztlán, but in Texas, fighters are encouraged to develop their powers to their extremes, risking life and limb in the process. Despite breaking with his home culture, Nōchtli is still a relatively conservative fighter, fighting mostly with his fists unless there is no other way to secure victory.
