Sunderance Act 2 - Chapter 06 - Pages 01-06
“All units, all units. Major disturbance in the Canopy reported between Moss Street and Ivy Avenue. Every officer in the district is to respond as soon as able. Fire and emergency teams are being notified and should be en route shortly. I repeat…”
“Dispatch, Officers Wolfard and Fangmeyer responding. We’re on Hill near the Canopy tunnel, moving out now. Any more details on the disturbance?”
The tigress’s muzzle curved into a frown as her partner relayed their location and status into his shoulder-mounted radio, and she swung the ZPD cruiser around in a sharp U-turn. A flick of a claw had the reds-and-blues flaring to life as she carefully cut across traffic, causing more than one of the various sizes of vehicles on the busy road to slow to a stop to allow their passage. Quickly picking up speed, her ear flicked as dispatch responded.
“Not entirely clear. Reports of gunfire and a possible explosion came in a few minutes ago. No officers on the scene yet to verify. Extreme caution is advised. The Chief wants a sweep and a perimeter set on the west side of the river until we know more. This is a commercial district, so at this time of night it should be deserted, but seeing to the evacuation of any civilians that may be in the area is your top priority. If possible, do not engage suspects until more backup arrives.”
“Understood, dispatch,” the gray wolf replied, dropping his paw from the radio as he glanced at his new partner. “The way things have been going in this city, we’ll get there just in time to clean up the mess anyway.”
Fangmeyer released a light grunt and gave a short nod in reply, keeping their speed at just below breakneck as they dropped onto the ramp leading into the mostly empty tunnel between Downtown and the Rainforest District. She allowed the blessed silence – aside from the sirens echoing through the tunnel – to stretch for as long as possible while her partner tapped on the screen built into the cruiser’s dashboard, bringing up the overhead map of their destination. She very nearly jumped when he reached for her sidearm and slipped the tranq-gun from its holster, trying very hard to ignore the fact that she’d shivered. And trying even harder to ignore the perk of his ears and the smile in his eyes as he checked the weapon’s load.
“Still avoiding it, are we?”
“I’m not avoiding anything,” she gritted out between clenched fangs, her eyes glued to the road as her paws were to the wheel. “We’re on a call. It’s not the time to talk about… It.”
“Well, at least ‘It’ has been upgraded from ‘nothing,’” he said, only grinning as she released a little growl that held no real heat. “And it is never time to talk about it. You’ve been avoiding me for a week. I figured since we’re heading into possible life-threatening peril, I would take the captive-audience approach.”
“It was just a kiss,” she began sharply, glancing at him and letting her next words die off at the silent, bordering on coolly amused look he sent her way. Drawing in a breath, she released it slowly, muttering, “I’ve already screwed up one partner’s career. I don’t want it to happen to another.”
“That’s bullshit and you know it,” he said, his tone as calm as it ever was despite how the words made her ears flattened. “Weaselton ruined his own life. He was under investigation by IA five times – two of which were because of your reports – and managed to slip past every one of them. Even the Chief didn’t like the slimy little shit. But now, whatever guardian devil he had sitting on his shoulder has abandoned him.”
“But he was my partner!” she growled, easily changing lanes to pass an elephant-sized delivery truck despite her mounting irritation.
“Now I’m your partner. And if there was a chance that I murdered someone, then framed an innocent mammal for that murder, would ‘It’ prevent you from doing the right thing again?” When she scoffed at the idea of the honorable, honest cop beside her destroying lives, he smiled slightly when she shook her head. “Of course it wouldn’t. Weaselton is responsible for his own actions and the consequences are his alone. You did what any partner would have done; you supported him as far as your conscience and the law would allow, then you did the right thing. Every cop in our house knows that, including the Chief. Which is why he stuck you with me as your irrepressible, charming partner this time around. You deserve me.”
She couldn’t hold back the quick, throaty laugh that she just knew without even looking had him grinning from ear to pointed ear. A low, rumbling chuff of affection escaped her before she could stop it, causing heat to spread up her ears as she firmly kept her eyes on the road.
“It’s still not a good idea.”
“If we make it out of tonight unscathed, we should have dinner,” he said, bulldozing over her statement as if she’d never spoken. The corners of her muzzle twitched into a bemused grin. “There’s a nice seafood restaurant on Shady. I promise to be on my best behavior. Even with that adorable chuffing tempting me.”
“No trying to kiss me again,” she stated, keeping her tone firm even as she saw his ears droop for a moment before they perked back up.
“I’m noting for the record that we did a lot more than try to kiss last time, but I agree to no kissing,” he promised, raising his paw in a Jr. Ranger Scouts salute. The beat of silence that followed was so heavy between them that it didn’t even surprise her when he continued, “Keeping in mind that kissing is not necessarily required for me to get you out of that uniform or for my paws to be all over you.”
“Irrepressible,” she huffed lightly, though she couldn’t deny the little tremble that came with his words. She set her face as the tunnel exit sign came into view. “We’re coming out.”
As we had talked about, the following pages from now on will include the portion of Kulkum's writing it relates too.
And so we start a new chapter in Sunderance. Hope everyone's year has started well enough. Christmas time can be quite turbulent around these parts this year was no exception, if anything it was more so than previous years. Lot's a family visits, lunches, dinners, activities and then some. We even had a death in the family, our dog, Judy, passed away recently. For the record he name is a coincidence, she was named a few years before Zootopia came out. She was old and not well so we had to make one of the harder calls and stayed with her to the very end.
Hopefully the next update won't take as long to make. But now I'm waiting on Kulkum to write more, so blame him! =D
Anyway, Christmas is hell.
See you next update.
