Lately I’ve been in a mood to draw fennec foxes. Not only because they’re super cute, but also unexpectedly badass. I mean, these little lads are thriving in the Sahara desert, one of the harshest places on earth. So, I felt compelled to include some kind of fennec people in my fantasy world. Hence this drawing! :3
(TW: mention of animal death + snake/viper)
The character I drew here is named Veki (she/they), a fierce huntress and warrior from a nomadic tribe. One evidence among others of that fact is the pendant necklace they’re wearing, featuring two viper fangs. Indeed, as a rite of passage to adulthood, it is common among fennec people to go fight a sand viper in close quarter. If they’re successful, they can wear its fangs in some fashion. Some, like Veki, choose to wear them as pendants on a necklace, while other individual choose to wear them as earrings, etc. However, Veki also has a softer side. But that’s a story for another day. ;3
Speaking about earrings, here’s a fun fact: the earring decorations aren’t made of gems, but of glasses. Indeed, my fennec people are known for their mastery of sand magic, which help them greatly in glass making, mixed with fire magic. Maybe I’ll elaborate on that in the future?
That being said, I’m looking forward to draw more of my fennec people, including Veki. UwU

A traditional drawing dated to January 2025. It depicts a small anthropomorphic fennec.
They have big brown eyes, big ears and a fluffy tail. Their fur color range from yellow to white, while to tip of the tail and ears are brown. They also have a long mane, ashen blond in color, worn down, except for a few braids.
They wear a reddish brown loincloth with red and orange decorative trim and patterns, two pieces of clothes around their waist (a blue one on top, and an orange one underneath), and a scarf or cape-like cloth around their neck and shoulder, with brown and red stripes, leaving most of their torso bared.
They also have decorative patterns drawn on their fur (more specifically on their biceps, tights and the back of their ears). And they wear several pieces of jewellery on their ears, around their wrist and their left ankle. They have a pendant necklace with four small pieces of glassware and two viper fangs.
They are equipped with a bow, a quiver and a short slightly curved blade.

I also plan on elaborating on the desert fauna, such as the snakes. I assumed they would fight a sand viper by default, but I might retcon that later and worldbuild a more otherworldly beast instead (or in addition). For example, I assumed the snake bite would be deadly, but perhaps their venom could have other effects? Like paralysis or exhaustion for example.
And thank you about the sand magic and glassblowing! I'm looking forward to elaborate on both of those things. I take a lot of pleasure in imagining some of the cultural "quirks" my fictional species might develop.
