I'm still surprised he hasn't lost grip yet, or that his hat or glasses haven't fallen off him for that matter!
If he does lose grip, however, I'm pretty sure Power Squirrel will help him out in that spot of bother.
The other possibility is that if he falls and crashes into the ground, his body would squash like an accordion. Shades will walk off and appear fine and dandy in the next scene.
The main thing is that he's a cartoon, and that cartoon logic would apply to him. All in all it's really a case of if it's funny, instead of a matter of life and death.
(Gah, maybe I've put too much thought into all this! Ah well, pardon my rambling.)
