The Special Agent and the Marquis
Dianne, I have noticed today that I am being followed around by what I can only describe as a large white rabbit in a long red coat. He walks upright and is, I estimate sixty-five inches tall. Not counting the ears. Much the same way that I could not count a bouffant hairstyle when measuring the height of a human. While I can see him, he does not seem to have any physical presence in this world, nor can anyone else see him, aside from brief manifestations that require a great effort on his part. He can hear me and he does speak to me in what I can guess is a light Northern German accent. He has assured me that he is not from Germany, or any place on this planet. He calls himself a “Tree Walker”, a kind of magician who can travel to other worlds by means of inter-dimensional portals that he can open in special trees that are mystically connected with other such trees. It appears that he is from a world in which intelligent animals like himself are common.
He calls himself the Marquis de Hoto, a title of French nobility. He is not from France either, but an otherworldly country that he presumably rules. He does not appear to have any other name. I had lightheartedly suggested calling him “Harvey” because of his current condition of being visible only to me, but he recoiled from that, warning me that ‘names grant power,’ and that ‘a newly-given name creates obligation.’ I will not question a Magician about these matters.
It seems that this Rabbit is trapped in a state between two worlds, something that he did not plan on happening when he arrived here a few nights ago. ‘There is something wrong with the trees here,’ he told me. ‘We are on the edge of a gulf above the void.’ His perceptions do extend enough into our world that we have been able to run some field tests to assure me that I am not hallucinating. Indeed, his repeated efforts to break through generate a vibration that interferes with local radio and television transmissions.
I've been binge-watching Twin Peaks, and I got the wild idea of a curious crossover between Special Agent Dale Cooper and the Marquis de Hoto, from the video game "Night of the Rabbit". It seems natural that a magician who has the ability to walk between worlds would get messed up in this Black Lodge business up in Twin Peaks. I spent so much time trying to get Cooper's features right.

Watching it now, years after I first discovered it, I still hugely love it. So sad that so much of the cast has died by now.
The Marquis is not my character. He's from the aforementioned video game dating from 2013 (available on Steam), of which I'm a fan. For reasons. He's the creation of Matt and Sebastian Kempke (both on BluSky).
