And in contrast to his dutiful younger sister, I decided to make Zan a bit of a stinker. And also decided that Zan and Mei were siblings in fantasy world instead of just alternates of each other.

While Mei took to proving herself to the crown, Zan just enjoyed life at court. Hey, dad had sent him away to go live in a castle so why not enjoy life? And when seducing a nobleman's wife seemed about to land him in a hell of a lot of trouble, Zan just took off. He stole some gear from the armory and traveled the kingdom as a sellsword.

He's decent with a sword and shield, although being more interested in living the fun life means that he's not the same caliber of warrior his sister is. He's a lot better at telling tall tales, wooing women, and getting the party started.

Zan loves wine, women, song, and trading on his sister's position as a paladin for his own benefit. This and borrowing money he couldn't pay back eventually landed the frivolous panda in a lot of trouble.

So, Mei came to his rescue, bailing him out... and putting him on a leash. She hired her brother as a retainer, back-up muscle for her missions from the queen. She spends half of her own pay to keep him on retainer but that keeps Zan out of trouble.

Mostly. Mostly out of trouble. At least, it lets her keep an eye on him.
