Though mixed with a bit of shock and horror from their unexpected transformation, when pitching the idea for the commission, I liked to imagine it as them getting to join the peaceful life of the colony and breaking free of their rigid human one. Literally "breaking free," but also conveyed through the increasing colors, and the hard metal vs soft organics. (I also think armor looks very cool.)
