Been working on this painting on and off for a few days, and I'm trying to finish it tonight. Clearly, it's still not even remotely done. I need to go in there with acrylics and do some highlighting, and probably get back in there with some watercolor, too. This is all really, really new to me, however. . . so I'd love to hear some pointers from folks who know traditional media better than me.
If you've done a lot of watercolor/acrylic/pencil work, and think you might have tips or pointers, please. . . I'm all ears. Especially anything having to do with physically handling the media itself. . . because I suspect I am handling my supplies wrong in at least ten dozen different ways.

Most important thing about working with watercolours is using appropriate brushes. I personally prefer Kolibri made with pure squirrel fur. Generally speaking, the more expensive the brush and the softer the fur, the better. The second thing is the paint itself - avoid bright, vivid colours as it means that the paint has white filler in it - in this case it's not a watercolour at all, just something like gouache. Don't buy watercolours in tubes, the best choice are paints pressed in the shape of solid blocks. And the paper, of course - it shoud be strong, thick and dense (or "succulent" as my teacher used to say).
Good luck with watercolours!

Thanks x] Cake version of watercolours works best for me, but it's a matter of taste. They're truly professional paints (and expensive as hell) and it was horrible to learn how to use them properly at the beginning, but now I cannot imagine anything else for making realistic-looking backgrounds. x]
I love the bottom's face. I really want to get back into watercolours :U I haven't touched the medium in a while, but glazing can be very handy to pull a piece together and push background elements into the background. http://www.johnlovett.com/techniq.htm
Looks like you are doing everything right. I can't tell if you are doing a pale ultramarine base layer or not but you'd be amazed how much that can help. Just let it dry completely and as long as you are not using dork Walmart colors it should not get muddy. If you need to know what this looks like i have a few scans as I happened to have made some for the panel I am doing at AC
This looks great to me so far. I would say just remember with Acrylics, you can and should do many thin layers to get depth and texture. Also, I find useing ProWhite (an opaque white watercolor) as a last thing to make any bright highlights, especialy in furr, works well.
I've only recently gotten back into watercolors but something that has always helped me is that I find a color which to use in the entire piece to pull it together, and mix it into every paint color I use, even if it is only a little bit. You probably already do that though, by the looks of it :p
Have you tried also using watercolor pencils? They can be pretty fun when it comes to details, especially fur.

Wow... ^_^ I don't see many people posting this revealing of work on here. I LOVE IT!!! and your
attention to detail is amazing!!!! I love the facial features on both your subjects: totally
believable and very much full of emotion. You also chose the right emotion. I've seen many artists choose
emotions on their subjects that just don't fit the piece... You got a gift my friend... AND YOU'RE ASKING FOR ADVICE?!
Honey... If anything... We all should be on our knees praying to a Gilded bronze effigy of you made entirely of polished
rare gemstones. You are amazing! I don't want to read otherwise ever again... or I shall bitch slap you.... I MEAN IT!!!!
