In my last post, I talked about restoring an M1917. Well, that's not the only 30-06 Rifle that's in need of restoration. I also have an M1 Garand that's getting close to being safe to shoot again.
There is a good reason I picked up an M1, and those of you who know me well already know this: My grandfather carried one in World War 2.
He carried it from D-Day+1 where he and the rest of the 2nd Infantry landed on Omaha Beach, all the way through France, through Belgium, and into Germany. He was lightly wounded during the infamous battle in the Ardennes (Battle of the Bulge), but recovered and returned to his unit in short order, and continued to serve until the war in Europe ended. I'd wanted an M1 for a long time for that reason.
My Grandfather passed away not long after 9-11 after a long battle with Parkinson's.
My M1 may never get to be fully restored (its rear site was milled away and replaced by a Williams Peep Sight), but she still pings.
In this image, I portrayed my raptor, Karata, moving through the Ardennes forest during a snowy and foggy day. His feathers keeping him well insulated from the cold, he doesn't need the heavy jacket GIs were eventually issued. But the Krauts are out there... he can probably smell them at this point....
If you'd like a commission, or would like to help donate to Project 1917, head on over to my KoFi: https://ko-fi.com/tank50us or my Square page: https://dragon-digital-designs.square.site/ and place your order!
I've been working on commissions at night, Sunday through Thursday morning recently, so if you're interested in getting something, you will see progress.
If you choose to donate through Ko-Fi, and want nothing in return, please leave in the message box "M1917R", and I'll know you're just pitching some funds towards the donation pool.
