My second large illustration commission from 2020, made for
yeenaroo.
The commissioner wanted their character portrayed as a nordic (some would call it viking) shieldmaiden, or skjaldmær in Old Norse.
For the frame in this one, I took inspiration from how dwarven architecture is typically portrayed, with heavy, strong, angular geometry. It consists of, as might seem usual by now, three parts:
1. The top bears a runic inscription in regular english - "MAIDEN OF FREJA" - but transliterated to fuþark runes. I like transliterations, as they give some thematic depth to the piece, while at the same time allowing the regular viewer to decode them in a simple puzzle, and they don't necessarily require the knowledge of a different language.
2. The sides feature tall corniferous trees growing on barren mountains, with a little dwarven detail in the stylized mountains and arches.
3. The bottom displays an absurdly long longship, stylized after the ships portrayed in the Bayeux Tapestry (this will also be a relevant detail in the next commission). The looongship was the most fun part to draw for me out of the entire commission, and I'm still quite happy with it to this day.
The character is wearing clothing and gear appropriate for a Viking Age warrior; a decorated shirt and regular tunic, pants wrapped on the calves with straps of cloth. The armour consists of a chainmail tunic and a spectacle helmet with a coif, based on historical examples.
The shield features a runic motif, and is bound with strips of rawhide - a detail I am quite proud of. The spear is a regular hunting spear with two wings - they would prevent a mad, impaled animal from pushing through the tip and sliding closer the wielder. They are also equpped with a regular sword, and a small hunting knife (something akin to a modern utility knife in those times).
The background landscape on this one was based on one specific photograph I found, and was quite arduous - but fun - to draw. The coloured rocks were part of that photo, and I merely bumped up the saturation of the colours to give the piece more life overall.
